SMARTBoards and Interactive Multiplication Tables

As my daughter enters the 3rd Grade (8 years old), she'll be working on memorizing her multiplication facts from 0 through 12. My experience as a Mathematics teacher is that memorizing multiplication facts, like it or not, makes life a lot easier in today's Mathematics classroom.

At home, I downloaded Timez Attack for her to practice her facts. She absolutely loves this game and has advanced way past my expectations. At school, I hope her teacher takes advantage of some of the outstanding interactive websites that are dedicated to helping kids learn, understand, and practice their multiplication facts.

Here's a good collection of interactive multiplication review activities for the classroom that work great on the SMART Board.

Get SMART with SMART Boards Podcast - Episode 3

Harvey and I just finished recording the 3rd episode of the Get SMART with SMART Boards podcast. Harvey thought it would be fun to focus on a "magic" theme for this week's podcast and the result was fantastic!

In this podcast, we each share one of our favorite websites for the SMART Board.  Harvey begins his "magic" theme by discussing the site The Magic Gopher and I talk about one of my favorite websites that displays a life size blue whale floating by you as you watch in amazement. It's a great site to watch and interact with on your SMART Board.

In our Notebook file segment of the podcast, Harvey shares his Magic Birthday application and I provide a Notebook application about Johnny Appleseed which contains five examples of how to use animation to provide feedback.

Finally, in our Tips and Tricks segment, we both share a Notebook file that demonstrates how to reveal information using a magic glass or a magic flashlight.

Harvey reveals how to create amazing characters using the site Build Your Wild Self and Jim shares a fun site called The Eyeballing Game that lets students make adjustments to various geometries to try to make them perfect.

Harvey and Jim bring their Notebook development talents directly to teachers. Harvey shares his famous Function Man application and Jim provides a Notebook application that proves that their teacher should be their role mode.

Finally, Harvey and Jim share their tips on how to change colors of a picture inside  Notebook and how to automatically re-size images quickly and easily.

SMART Boards, Twitter, and Learning Spanish

This morning on Twitter, one of my followers asked for some resources for learning how to speak Spanish in the early grades.

One way to share resources on Twitter is to use hashtags to make it easy to organize Tweets.

I sent out a request on Twitter for others to share resources for learning to speak Spanish in the early grades.

The way it works is that people who follow me on Twitter would type in a Tweet with the Spanish resource web address they want to share and they would also type in a custom hashtag.

In this situation, I used #iwbspanish as the hashtag (you can use anything) to collect these suggestions. Since all the recommendations use the #iwbspanish hashtag, all you need to do search on #iwbspanish in Twitter to see all the Tweets where people shared their Spanish resources. How unbelievably cool is that! Most of the resources that I shared work great on the SMART Board.

Here's an example of one of my Tweets in Twitter that added a resource to the #iwbspanish hashtag:

Get SMART with SMART Boards Podcast

I'm excited to announce a new podcast called Get SMART with SMART Boards. SMART Board expert Harvey Almarode and I join forces to help teachers use the SMART Board more effectively in the classroom.

In the first episode, Harvey discusses how he uses the website JigSawDoku to have children play SuDoKu and I share an amazing website called Flash Animations for Physics.

In addition, Harvey and I both share a Notebook application that teachers can use immediately inside the classroom. Harvey shares his Bird on a Wire Notebook application and I my application on the Gettysburg Address.

Finally, you'll hear about two great tips for using Notebook more effectively. Harvey explains how to color in a freehand drawing in Notebook and I describe how to customize the Notebook toolbar. Each tip has an accompanying video.
