SMARTBoard Lesson Ideas and Resources

Where do teachers go to get lesson plan ideas and resources for their interactive whiteboard? 

The obvious place to go is to Smart Technologies Notebook software lesson activities where you can search for lessons by subject and grade level.

Another idea is to search through the eThemes Resources listed by grade level. This site provides an extensive library of lesson ideas and resources that can help teachers develop materials for their SMART Board.

SMART Board Games For a Friday Afternoon

Hello to all my friends who visit Teachers Love SMART Boards!

Today is my birthday so I thought I would share with you two fun flash games to use on a Friday afternoon to kill a little time.

The first game is called Uncross The Lines. It's a fairly addictive game that the kids can play at the SMART Board.

The second game has absolutely no redeeming value other than to make you smile. It's called Flight of the Hamster. I'm sure some of the more creative teachers can use this game to create a fun lesson plan.

SmartBoard Games for Primary #2

A few primary teachers sent me an email to thank me for providing some fun games for their Kindergarten and 1st grade classes.

Your kind words have prompted me to give you a few more games for your interactive whiteboards.

1. Here's a great interactive counting game for the kids just learning to use numbers. (Update: This game has been removed at the request of the developer. Since the developer's site contains an excessive amount of advertising, I will not recommend or provide a link to the company's website.)
2. Here's a fun matching (memorizing) game that has audio to help kids remember.
3. Here's a new twist on the old peg logic game. This is wonderful game for the kids!

I want to direct you to a teacher's website called Mr. Hudson's World. It's a good example of putting information from the classroom into a blog and sharing it with parents, students, and teachers. It also has a great example of how he saved an entire math lesson on the Smart Board and put it on his blog in PDF format. Way cool!

SMARTBoards and interactive websites for Mathematics

Primary School - Check out ICT Games and give yourself plenty of time to look around and fall in love with all the great interactive activities.

Middle School - Math Playground has a remarkable collection of interactive activities including word problems, logic games, videos, and even an interactive programming language.

High School - Where do you go for interactive activities for your more advanced mathematical concepts? EASY, you go to RonBlond. I truly wish I had advanced visuals like these when I was taking my advanced math classes.

Smart Board "Educator Resources" Newsletter

The October edition of the EDCompass newsletter has just been released and it focuses on the various resources available to educators. It also includes the Feature Article entitled "Blog On" which has some great information about blogs in education and even talks a little about this blog, "Teachers Love SMART Boards."

Smartboard Interactive Website - Skillswise

One of the all-time great Interactive whiteboard resources is the Skillswise page created by the BBC. This page was created for adults working to improve their reading and math skills. However, the resources are perfect for high school remediation or grade 3-8 core classrooms. This site has some of the best interactive writing lessons for the Smart Board and really lends itself perfectly to student interaction.

This site has factsheets, interactive quizzes, worksheets, and even interactive games for your smartboard.

As they say, "try it, you'll like it!"

SmartBoard Games - Just for Fun

Okay, everyone likes to play a few fun games on the SmartBoard. Maybe you could use this one for a Friday afternoon reward. Here is the classic Battleship game for your enjoyment. If you want, you can right-click and Save the file directly on your computer.

For the younger kids, here's a great website called Pauly's Playhouse that is full of fun games and activities suitable for the primary grades.

SmartBoard Algebra Website

I found this website called algebasics that completes Algebra problems in a step by step manner. Normally, I wouldn't put a site like this on my blog because the website does not have interactive resources. However, teachers could easily have students come up to the board and solve the problem and then show the video of the problem being solved. In addition, the problems can be stopped along the way allowing the facilitator to create more interaction along the way.

While the best use of SmartBoards is to have the students interact with the material, this site gives the teacher a number of options while showing the correct way to solve algebraic problems.

I was trying to remember the website I used a number of years back to do Mad Libs online. I finally found it and it looks like they expanded things a little. The site is called Wacky Web Tales and can be found at http://www.eduplace.com/tales/  It's a lot of fun to use this site to practice your parts of speech.  

3. A good tip on erasing on your SmartBoard

A real easy trick to erase a lot of written content on your SMART Board - pick up the eraser and circle an area and then tap in the middle... it will erase everything within the circle... [thanks Keith!]

4. Support for erasing your SmartBoard in the form of a video tip:

Here's a demonstration of erasing by drawing a circle and tapping. The only thing I can think of is that you're not tapping in the middle of your circle quickly enough. Click the link below to take a look.

Free games for your SmartBoard

I just added two free flash games that you can download right to your computer and play on your SmartBoard. They are perfect companions to have in the classroom for when your students need a break and you still want them using their noggin. These interactive games are two of the most popular games ever invented and you'll just love the computer versions.

SmartBoard and Google Earth Example

SMART Board and Google Earth example:

Here is a demonstration of how to find locations to view inside Google Earth. This is a great way to build a Google Earth tour to show on your Smart Board. This presentation will show you how I found three locations of different bat populations and viewed them using Google Earth.

SmartBoard Free Lesson Customization

I thought it would be fun to demonstrate how to create an interactive lesson using the Smart Notebook software and the Lesson Activity Toolkit.

The best way to decide what type of lesson to create is to get suggestions from other teachers. If anyone has a good idea for an interactive lesson that they can use in their classroom, I will take the suggestion and create a customized lesson and make the lesson available by this Friday. While I can't create more than one customized lesson by Friday, if I get multiple suggestions, I promise to do my best and find a good interactive activity that could be used.

Keeping Up With the Blogs

While this post does not talk specifically about SmartBoards, it can definitely help you keep up-to-date with all the information out there in the blogosphere.

Here is a video that helps explain how and why you should subscribe to blogs (like this one) so you can manage and keep up with a lot of information in a short amount of time.

SmartBoard Blog Report #4

One of the best ways to stay on top of things is to see what other people are doing with their Smart Boards. Here's a brief recap of blogs about SmartBoards:

1. EduGeek asks the question about which Interactive Whiteboard people are using and why. It provides a pretty good comparison of IWB pros and cons. I do not agree with one of the replies that suggests people avoid software like Notebook and stick to using PowerPoint. I think this must be someone who has never used Notebook.

2. I love this blog post from a student in Malaysia who recaps what she went through during the making of her Smart Board activity. From reading her other posts, it appears she did a great job!!!

3. Here's a short blog entry about a teacher's first experience with her SmartBoard.

SmartBoard Geography Website - Maps that Teach

Attention all geography teachers!!! I want to share with you a remarkable website that provides interactive maps of the whole world. The site was created by Owl & Mouse Educational Software and it is truly one of those perfect sites to use with your Smart Board interactive whiteboard.

The site provides online interactive maps and it has some great downloads for your computer. It also has information on how to use the maps in the classroom. When you go to the site, please look around. If you find something useful, please pass it along to your fellow educators!

SmartBoard Blog Report #3

Remember that it's important to stay in touch with what other people are doing with their Smartboards. A great way to stay keep informed with authentic uses of the Smart Boards is by reading blogs. Remember to leave comments on the blogs if you have questions or you just want to leave some positive feedback. So here we go...

1. Tech Uses in the Classroom: This blog entry talks about a teacher's idea of how students will use the SmartBoard to give a presentation. This definitely has the beginnings of a student-centered classroom!

2. The Smart Board Saga: The author talks about how long it takes to develop good lessons and the need for more collaboration between teachers. If you know of any great lessons for HS Spanish, please let her know by leaving a message in her comments section.

3. Smart Board Lesson Podcast #93 - Tip-Tastic:  Another great podcast from Joan and Ben. This podcast has great tips for using your SmartBoard and some great ideas on collaboration websites. Please make it a habit of listening to this weekly podcast...you may even learn to love Ben's sense of humor.  :o)
